Dust off your Brilliance Meter…
This one is for the self-employed among you….
In employment most people are part of defined structures which tell us how we are doing: regular team meetings, targets, performance reviews. Chances are, when you were employed, you usually knew where you stood. And…. if you brought in a big deal, delighted a client or a solved a challenge the company were facing, you’d want other people to know, and you’d feel pretty chuffed.
When we are self employed we monitor our own performance, and set our own targets. Unfortunately the targets we set are almost always stretch targets. The ambition and discipline it takes to build your own business can be a double edged sword. Chances are these days you are never quite happy with how you are doing. Too many of the self employed people we’ve met recently simply don’t realise how brilliant they are! They are growing businesses and bringing in deals at an impressive rate; they are making tough decisions and choices every day, and getting it right more than they get it wrong, and they are getting out there are making things happen. When we hear people whose brilliance meter is on the blink we ask them to take a few minutes to think of their business as their employer, and work out how well they, as an employee are serving the cause; would they be more willing to be proud of the achievements if they thought in that way? In most cases they would….. so, if you haven’t tried thinking that way before…. give yourself a 5 minute employee performance review – you might not be perfect, but you might find you are more impressive than you feel.
