In defence of the Pin Money Business

Last week we heard a “motivational” speaker deride people who grow their business part time. They outlined why being one-foot in and one foot out was for cowards, and why the only way to succeed is to close other doors and dive in. A day later we heard someone describe a fellow networker as “not needing to work”, and we ourselves have used the term pin-money business to indicate a lifestyle business designed to supplement other or existing income.

For lots of us, our businesses are a full time (and the rest) affair, and many people start their own business with very little financial cushion. There is no denying that needing something to be a success can be a great motivator. But… when we really think about it….. I wonder how much of the derision about growing a part time business is jealousy. When it comes down to it, removing the need to earn enough to live on, and grow quickly is a great way to build a business where you can really protect your brand, do only the work that really fits with your vision, and the stuff that builds the strongest reputation. In an age where too many people are forced out of employment, perhaps we should be more positive about anyone who takes more control of their own destiny.
