If you’ve decided to start looking for an opportunity to serve on a board it can be daunting to know where to start. Here are some suggestions on things to do/consider:
Non-exec roles – Paid or Unpaid
Most board positions will cover reasonable expenses, some also offer a salary, payment, day rate or stipend. The rates of pay for paid board roles can vary massively, and those which are better paid tend to be very competitive. The decision on whether to apply for a paid or unpaid role is a personal one and may be dictated by personal circumstances. People who aspire to take on paid board positions in future often begin by spending a period of time as an unpaid board member or trustee in order to build up relevant board experience. If you already have board-level experience, or you bring other skills which a board needs then you may be able to apply for paid positions immediately.
