Things to know before starting a business….
We really enjoyed reading this article about things to know before starting a business (http://mashable.com/2012/01/21/6-things-starting-business/) but here are a few more which we’d include:
1. Don’t over-estimate the importance of planning: whilst we agree that a business plan, and planning in general, are vital to the success of your business, we also see people who cling to these plans like security blankets. A plan is fantastic, but it is no substitute for action – when you enough to proceed with caution, get moving.
2. You won’t improve your work-life balance: if you start a business with the aim of improving your work-life balance you may be sorely disappointed. New businesses are often fragile, demanding and hard, hard work. Sometimes they aren’t, but more often than not, they are. Increasing the level of control and flexibility in your life is usually realistic, but improving work/life balance is often something which follows some way down the line.
3. You aren’t as different as you think. When you come to defining your product or service spend some time looking at what your competitors say and do – whilst we are sure you are deeply passionate about what you do, are committed to high levels of customer service and believe that as a result of low overheads you can deliver excellent value, none of these factors are likely to be differentiators in your market place.
