Tune into defensiveness
We often interpret feeling defensive as a form of weakeness. It is often followed by a feeling of shame. High performing teams recognise that feeling defensive is a form of data. Your response to defensiveness is important, but it is useful to allow yourself time and space to recognise and analyse it. Did you feel defensive because someone was wrong? If so, how certain are you that they were wrong? What information do you have, that they don’t have? More often, we feel defensive because we know someone is right, or partly right in something they have said. What are the things we need to learn from this? What did they see in us that we thought was hidden?
