As organisations grow we often talk about taking on team members, or outsourcing some of the work. This has a clear role in terms of freeing up some time, and making sure that the most senior person, or people, in a business, can focus on the highest value activity.
However, it isn’t the only advantage. As your organisation develops and you need to make strategic decisions, there are some advantages on having someone else compiling reporting data. It is very hard to objectively assess information which you’ve compiled yourself.
At some stages of your business there will be no option other than to do this, but when you think about what to delegate consider whether there are opportunities to have someone provide you with information about the business, so that you can look at it with fresh eyes, rather than mark your own homework.
