Non-exec rules – Demonstrate that you understand governance

We work with lots of entrepreneurs to help them to understand and secure Non-exec roles. We also support organisations to find the right Non-exec for them, and many of our team work in Non-exec roles. This series of blogs covers the How, What and Why of securing a Non-exec role.

If you’ve decided to start looking for an opportunity to serve on a board it can be daunting to know where to start. Here are some suggestions on things to do/consider:

Boards are responsible for governance – including managing risk. Depending on the organisation you are applying to, the governance arrangements may vary. Trustees have specific duties as opposed to say a Non-Executive Director of an NHS Trust. Do a bit of research about the organisation and demonstrate your understanding in your CV. Depending on the organisation you are talking to, and your own previous experience, this might mean that you include:

  • Times when you have identified, managed or mediated risks
  • Experience of compliance, or working in a regulated industry
  • Experience of developing or reviewing policy or procedures
  • Experience of organisational change
  • Experience of consulting with communities or specialist groups
  • Experience of using data to make decisions
  • Be outcome driven
