There are times for any business person, or entrepreneur, when we need to call in some support. Knowing who to call, and when, can make a real difference to how fast and how effectively you overcome challenges. This series of blogs explores some of the main types of support available to you, and some things to consider in choosing what type of support you might need. [So far we’ve covered Coaching, Mentoring & Peer-to-peer/Action Learning]
Type of Support: Networking
What is it?
Networking often takes place at scheduled networking sessions, or groups. The purpose of networking is to meet other business who may be able to help your business (through referrals, recommendations, becoming clients etc). Some people also use networking as a way to find new ideas or solutions for challenges they face.
Pros
Networking can be a great way to meet like-minded business people and form relationships. These new relationships can lead to conversations which can provide valuable support for your business.
Cons
The primary purpose of networking for most people is around sales and referrals, this can lead to everyone presenting a very positive version of their business – where everything is fine and they have no challenges- this can make it an inhospitable or unwise setting to discuss challenges you face in your own business.
Ideal for…
Meeting new business people who you may want to discuss challenges with in future.
Things to consider when choosing who to work with:
Outside a formal structure it’s really important to be confident that any information you share will be treated as confidential. It may be best to select someone who has no vested interest in helping you (so you are confident that they are not looking to sell to you).
As with all business support it helps if you work with someone you get on with, someone who shares your values and someone who you trust. Don’t be shy of asking for a taster session, or to meet for a coffee before you decide to work with people, and if possible, meet more than on potential provider before you decide to proceed.
