I’m an entrepreneur, get me out of this! (Training)

There are times for any business person, or entrepreneur, when we need to call in some support. Knowing who to call, and when, can make a real difference to how fast and how effectively you overcome challenges. This series of blogs explores some of the main types of support available to you, and some things to consider in choosing what type of support you might need. [So far we’ve covered Coaching, Mentoring, Peer-to-peer/Action Learning & Networking]

Type of Support: Training

What is it?

Training is a way of learning new skills.

Pros

Learning new skills can equip you to deal with new and different challenges in future.

Cons

Training may not be individualised enough to tackle a specific challenge which you are facing.

Ideal for…

Learning something new which will expand your skills and equip you to do something new, or tackle different challenges.

Things to consider when choosing who to work with:

We’ve blogged about this extensively before, but if you are choosing a trainer, you should ask for evidence of the efficacy of the techniques/approaches they are training, and be sure that you are confident that the research or evidence they present if robust. You may also want to know how they training/what their training style is to see if it’s something you are likely to respond well to.

As with all business support it helps if you work with someone you get on with, someone who shares your values and someone who you trust. Don’t be shy of asking for a taster session, or to meet for a coffee before you decide to work with people, and if possible, meet more than on potential provider before you decide to proceed.
