There are times for any business person, or entrepreneur, when we need to call in some support. Knowing who to call, and when, can make a real difference to how fast and how effectively you overcome challenges. This series of blogs explores some of the main types of support available to you, and some things to consider in choosing what type of support you might need. [So far we’ve covered So far we’ve covered Coaching, Mentoring, Peer-to-peer/Action Learning, Networking & Training]
Type of Support: Business Advisor
What is it?
Business advisors are usually able to advise on a range of generic business challenges.
Pros
A great business advisor will know about the key techniques and approaches which are recommended for running a business.
Cons
Business advisors sometimes have limited direct experience of running a business, and are often not evidence based in terms of the advice they give. This can mean you are advised to do something (for example write a business plan) because it is “the done thing” rather than because it is likely to support your business (see previous blogs for the evidence on why it probably won’t).
Ideal for…
Generic business challenges, especially at start-up stage.
Things to consider when choosing who to work with:
Does your business advisor have relevant experience? Are they advising based on research and evidence?
As with all business support it helps if you work with someone you get on with, someone who shares your values and someone who you trust. Don’t be shy of asking for a taster session, or to meet for a coffee before you decide to work with people, and if possible, meet more than on potential provider before you decide to proceed.
