Creativity and the Art of Perfection.

For many creative’s having an eye for detail is a matter of pride. If you have spent years learning your craft it’s only natural that you want to get every aspect right. Quality is really important in any business….. but obsessive perfectionism can be a risk in many. We work with a lot of creative’s (and with a lot of self-proclaimed techies and geeks who share similar characteristics) and for many of them the interaction between perfectionism and confidence can become toxic and damaging to their business. It takes an unusual kind of confidence to make it as a creative – to stand up in any subjective discipline and hold your work up as an example is a scary, scary business. This can lead to all sorts of problems, not least that creative’s can often struggle with their pricing strategies. There is one issue though which we see incredibly regularly – obsession with details which don’t matter to your customer. Let’s start by saying, customers love attention to detail – it can make them feel valued, increase their perception of value and turn them into real brand advocates. However, if you are naturally detail focussed it can be a challenge to pick out details which matter to your customers from those which only matter to you. So… before you spend another weekend tweaking, adjusting or redoing a project which was already underpriced….. Consider asking yourself (or someone else) whether the changes you are making are for you, or for your customer.
