Get going

Sometimes an idea can really grab ya; the sort of idea that keeps you up at night. The idea that colours all your thoughts and becomes so big that you can barely see past the massive potential it holds. What you do with those ideas can make a big difference to your success. Broadly we see people who fall into two camps. Some people have an idea, get up the next morning and make it happen. Other people think, plan, strategise, grab a flip chart, create financial models and then think some more. Both approaches are far from ideal, and it’s no surprise that the best approach lies somewhere in between. If you have a big idea you can do a lot worse than to work out what the least you have to do to get it up and running is, so that you can begin to test it for real. The fabulous “Lean Start-up” by Eric Ries talks a lot about the concept of a Minimum Viable Product, and that’s a great way to think about it. If you are naturally a jump in with two feet kinda person, concentrate on the viability aspect – what will your customers accept – where are the boundaries of that. If you are a thinker (or God-forbid, a procrastinator) concentrate on the Minimum aspect, and resist your urge to tweak.
