Job creation is a key government target, and new jobs are great for the economy. Many publicly funded programmes (especially those which are fully or part funded by European funds like ERDF) have job creation as a key, or sole, measure of success. Whilst it’s clear why this is important, decisions about when and if you take on employees should be made based on what is best for your business. For an increasing number of businesses the flexibility of using freelancers either initially or permanently is a more appropriate solution, but we’ve heard a few anecdotes where people have been talked out of this approach by advisors who were incentivised around job creation. Where you are receiving help or advice from a programme, make sure that you discuss the programme objectives up front – and bear these in mind when weighing up the advice you are given.
