Blog Series: Leading through Influence – Public speaking

Blog 2 – Public speaking

One of the ways in which we support our clients is in understand how they can do more to attract clients to them, rather than having to track potential clients down. We talk a lot of about leading through influence and the ways in which you can create expert-status for yourself or your brand. This series looks at some of the things you can do to share your expertise and position yourself as a leader in your field.

Lots of people fear public speaking, but it can be a very effective way of getting your message out to large groups. If you are good at it and not afraid, get stuck in and start looking for opportunities (often people start by taking speaking slots at networking groups, but if you develop a strong reputation you can find opportunities to speak to much larger groups and to get paid for speaking). If you aren’t a natural public speaker don’t despair, it is a skill which anyone can learn and improve at with some practise, and the nerves do get better, honest.

So, if this isn’t something that you are already doing, why not give it a try? We’d love to hear how you get on- and we are always here if you get stuck, tweet us @rubystartweet or drop us a line at tellmemore@rubystarassociates.co.uk/dev and we’ll see if we can unstick you

Writing articles uses very similar skills sets to blogging (see our blog on blogging here: <link>) but it can allow you to reach a much wider audience. The same is true of guest blogging. Our top tips on writing articles are:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask – lots of publications, including the websites of national press, will tell you how to apply to write blogs or articles and which topics they are most interested in.
  • Look for opportunities which will reach your target audience – a fantastic article in Fly Fishing Monthly will not be much use unless it’s readers are also your target audience.
  • Ask to see numbers: If you are approached to write a guest blog see what you can find out about how many people read it and what sort of audience they have.
  • Share articles and blogs you write through your own channels (always link to where it has been published rather than replicate it.
