In defence of the low growth business

Over the next few weeks we are going to be blogging about high-growth businesses. A huge amount of local, regional and national support is focussed on high growth businesses; this makes sense, high growth businesses can generate employment and are great for our economy – focussing support on these businesses generates more “bang per buck”.

BUT…. Not all businesses are high growth and not everyone wants to run one. The way that support is tailored towards high growth can place enormous pressure on entrepreneurs to build organisations designed for growth. So I want to take this opportunity (as I do regularly when I am speaking) to let you into a secret: It’s OK if you don’t want your organisation to grow. Low Growth businesses are important, generate some employment (usually for the owner manager) and can be incredibly stable, valuable and rewarding. One of the few perks of being self employed is being able to define what you want….. and if high-growth isn’t for you, then feel free to resist external pressure to move in that direction.
