Blog 4 – Appointments
One of the ways in which we support our clients is in understand how they can do more to attract clients to them, rather than having to track potential clients down. We talk a lot of about leading through influence and the ways in which you can create expert-status for yourself or your brand. This series looks at some of the things you can do to share your expertise and position yourself as a leader in your field.
If you have good business or sector-specific experience you may be able to take up a position as a non-executive Director, or as a trustee (trustee positions are almost always unpaid, non-exec positions are often paid).
Taking on another job might feel like madness, but:
- Being a trustee or non-exec can be a great way to gain experience of a sector, or understand it better.
- Board positions can increase your credibility in a market place.
- You can gain really valuable experience, insights and skills.
- Board positions can be a fantastic way to “give back” to a sector.
- Board positions extend your network.
Always remember the golden rule though: if you are a board director or a trustee your company shouldn’t directly benefit financially – so you should never be selling to the organisation you are on the board of. We wouldn’t recommend undertaking a board position purely as part of growing your influence, but many people discount them because of the time they can take, without fully considering the benefits which can come from being involved in this way. Board positions often come with training, so it can also be a great way to add to your own continuing professional development.
So, if this isn’t something that you are already doing, why not give it a try? We’d love to hear how you get on- and we are always here if you get stuck, tweet us @rubystartweet or drop us a line at tellmemore@rubystarassociates.co.uk/dev and we’ll see if we can unstick you
