Building a Business – Blog 5: Don’t copy your copy

Businesses often evolve rather than being built strategically, and a lot of the evidence supports this as a route to building a strong businesses. However, whilst we are not a great fan of business planning at the start of a business (blog) we think there are some great ways to use business planning approaches to review your established business. This blog series contains exercises to encourage you to review and refine your business.

Don’t copy your copy

Over time, most businesses get better at explaining what they do. Unfortunately it can take a while for our copy to catch up. For this exercise grab as many examples as you can of how you describe your business: marketing materials, website, LinkedIn profile, award entries, tenders & proposals, twitter bios, networking profiles etc. Are they all the same? If not, are there elements which you can take from them to create a new, better articulation which really captures your organisation? If there are a few people involved in the business you may find that you all explain it a bit differently, what can you learn from this?

This can feel like a bit of an artificial exercise, but done with enthusiasm and an open mind you may be surprised by what you discover. Give it a try and let us know how you get on – tellmemore@rubystarassociates.co.uk/dev
